With manual hand sharpening, a skate’s profile will get progressively worse each time it is sharpened. Two common shapes that result are:

Banana Blade

Banana blades reduce the amount of blade to ice contact making it more difficult to produce power from your strides

Flat Spot Blade

Flat spot in the center of the blade makes transitioning to different sections of the blade difficult
