WHAT IS HOLLOW?

DEPTH OF THE BLADE'S GROOVE

Hollow defines the depth of the blade’s groove measured in inches. A smaller hollow enhances grip for sharper turns, while a larger hollow provides a smoother glide.

Ultimately, there isn’t a definitive ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, it’s about choosing what feels most comfortable for your skating needs.

Below are some guidelines based on different player characteristics:

SMALLER HOLLOW

SMALLER RADIUS

    • Better grip (bite)
    • Faster take-offs
    • Faster stops
    • Sharper turns

LARGER HOLLOW

LARGER RADIUS

    • Smoother glide
    • Higher top speed
    • Less resistance
    • Easier transitioning

WEIGHT

Your weight is the primary factor to consider. Height is also closely related to weight — taller players tend to be heavier.

  • Heavier players tend to prefer a larger hollow (shallower).

Heavier weight results in increased pressure on the ice, which naturally leads to more grip and increased resistance. A shallower hollow reduces this friction, offering a smoother glide and more speed, while the player’s own weight will provide the grip they need.

  • Lighter players tend to prefer a smaller hollow (deeper).

Lower weight results in less pressure on the ice, which naturally leads to more glide and reduced resistance. Complimenting with a deeper hollow provides enhanced grip and edge control, improving stability for precise movements.

Another factor to consider is ice temperature. A smaller hollow works better on colder, harder surfaces, as it's more effective at penetrating tougher ice than larger hollows.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Choosing the right hollow can be tricky because it varies based on individual factors. For instance, a tall player’s hollow will differ if they are of average weight, above average weight, or below average weight. Each player's build and skating preference affects how the hollow impacts their skating performance.

We recommend a 5/8" hollow as a balanced and safe option, but we encourage experimenting with different sizes to find the most optimal for your skating style.
